Daughter of the Seine, Paris grew up along its meandering course, while its monuments and palaces weave the fabric of its history. It owes its birth to a river crossroads. But its first settlement remains unclear to this day.

Paris was built in the countryside, absorbing villages and farms, but also forests, meadows, marshes, and even vineyards that were the pride of the Paris Basin.

Over the centuries, one need only follow the evolution of this small piece of land called Lutetia, home to the Parisii tribe. As it grew, the city took the name Paris in the 4th century, and in 508, Clovis granted it the status of "seat of the kingdom.'
